President’s Message

Welcome to CAPA’s website, where we strive to provide you with information relevant to the paralegal profession. As you look around this site, you will find information on the requirements for becoming a paralegal in California (set forth in Business & Professions Code section 6450 et seq.), and tools to help you in your work as a paralegal. Please keep in mind that paralegals work under the supervision of attorneys and may not give legal advice!

CAPA’s 29th June Educational Conference was held on June 24, 2017, at the Wyndham Hotel in Visalia. We had a wonderful program this year, which consisted of four tracks, each focusing on a particular area of law and designed to provide you with the opportunity to walk away from the conference with new skills and in-depth knowledge of the topic covered. Each track provided 4 units of CLE, 3 units of general CLE and 1 unit of ethics. Our fabulous business partners/service providers also joined us as exhibitors at the conference to share information about their products and services. We are so grateful for the support of these service providers and our sustaining members!

CAPA's 11th Biennial Leadership Conference was held on November 4, 2017 at UCSD Extension Campus in sunny San Diego to an almost sold out crowd!  The event was a success with some amazing speakers.  Thank you to everyone who joined us.

CAPA continues to work on behalf of paralegals across California by providing educational opportunities such as those available through its Educational Conference. In addition, CAPA monitors legislation, case law, and other current events that may affect the paralegal profession. CAPA members will be kept updated on the status of issues such as these through reports to your local association’s CAPA representatives and through CAPA’s newsletter, RECAP.

CAPA has also created a certifying committee "CCP®" that has been developing and working on a California State Specific certified paralegal exam.  There is no national requirement to sit for this exam, one must only be compliant with B&P 6450 et seq. We are excited that our inaugural exam will be held on February 9, 2018 in Sacramento.  You can now register for this exam on our website through the Certification tab.

Please take time to explore our website, and feel free to email me with any questions or comments you may have. We appreciate your support of CAPA and of the paralegal profession!

A Special Message from your CAPA Executive Team

"Bad things do happen in the world, like war, natural disasters, disease. But out of those situations always arise stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things." ~Daryn Kagan

As most of you are probably aware, there have been and continue to be several devastating fires in the Northern California area. This has especially impacted our Redwood Empire Association of Paralegals (REAP) members. The damage the fires have caused is devastating, forcing many of our paralegal colleagues out of their homes and out of the area.  The Executive Committee is offering as much assistance as possible to our fellow colleagues, and we are asking for donations in any amount which will be given to those affected by these fires. We understand that money is tight for every association/individual but any bit helps. if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to CAPA 866.367.2272 or to any of the executive committee members.

To donate in general to our REAP colleagues, please send items/money to CAPA's mailing address: 501 W. Broadway. Suite A-162, San Diego, CA 92101. 100% of everything received will be provided to our REAP members.

With Love and Hope,
CAPA EC Team
